The Space

It is important that we feel safe and secure. For some, that includes knowing what to expect with where we are going.

The First Appointment

Your first appointment will be a time to get familiar with the office, to get settled and as comfortable as possible.

We will review paperwork as needed and highlight important items.

In the first session, I really want to get to know you. I ask a variety of background information to get to know you, your experiences, your story, and what brings you to therapy. You are able to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable.

You are welcome to ask any questions you need to and we can decide together if we feel we are able to connect and do work well together. It is important to me that you receive the support you need, whether that is with me or a referral if needed.

Sessions are approximately 53 minutes.

If you have additional questions, you can ask prior to scheduling or during session time.

What to Expect at Soothing Connections Counseling

Beginning therapy is a brave and meaningful step. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, struggling in your relationships, or simply seeking a deeper connection with yourself or others, our goal is to create a space where you feel safe, seen, and supported—right here in St. Charles, IL.

A Warm and Welcoming Environment

At Soothing Connections Counseling, we’ve intentionally designed our therapy office to feel more like a cozy, calming space than a clinical setting. Located conveniently in St. Charles and easily accessible from Geneva and surrounding Fox Valley communities, our office offers a private, peaceful environment that invites relaxation and reflection.

From the moment you arrive, our goal is to make you feel comfortable. Our waiting area offers a calm space to slow down and reflect before the session with a variety of comfortable seating options.

Your First Session: What It’s Like

The first therapy session is all about getting to know you. This is a space where you can show up just as you are—no need to prepare anything or have all the answers. We’ll explore what brings you in, what you hope to get out of therapy, and how we can work together to meet your goals.

We’ll talk through your history, your current concerns, and what’s been working (or not working) in your life and relationships. There’s no pressure—we move at a pace that feels right for you. This initial session is also a chance for you to ask questions about the therapy process, our approach, and anything else on your mind.

Emotionally Focused Therapy: How We Work

Our practice specializes in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)—a compassionate, research-backed approach that helps individuals, couples, and families restore emotional connection and heal from distress. Whether you’re seeking help for anxiety, relationship challenges, or deeper attachment wounds, EFT provides a powerful roadmap for creating lasting change.

Sessions are collaborative, supportive, and focused on building trust and safety. We help you identify patterns, process emotions, and develop stronger, more secure connections—with others and with yourself.

Frequency and Duration of Sessions

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, though this can vary based on your needs, goals, and schedule. We’ll check in regularly about how things are going and adjust the frequency as needed.

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all—some people find clarity and relief in just a few months, while others choose to work together over a longer period. We’ll honor your pace, your process, and your preferences while providing you with expert guidance.

In-Person

We currently offer in-person therapy at our St. Charles office. Many clients feel the additional benefit of the grounded experience of being in the therapy room.

*Select virtual sessions for clients throughout Illinois may be available. If you are requesting virtual sessions, please discuss with Sara Schramer, MA LCPC prior to scheduling.
